Arizona Cardinals first-round linebacker Haason Reddick has had to process a lot in the offseason and training camp.
Not only is he learning a new position at inside linebacker, he is also playing on the first team.
Formerly a defensive end in college, he has the athleticism and the drive to be good, and he has flashed some good things despite his inexperience. However, the one thing he is supposed to be best as — rushing the passer — has not been a strong spot so far from his new position.
“I would like to see him, when he blitzes, do some more,” Arians told reporters Monday. “He’s not doing crap — just running into whoever’s blocking him.”
Of course, he has been used to rushing the passer as an edge rusher, which is something different than rushing from the inside or from a linebacker position in space.
Arians recognized he and his coaches have to help him.
“We have to do a better job in practice of putting him in pass rush situations.”
Ultimately, this will not be the role he has in 2017, as Deone Bucannon will return and play his normal position, while Reddick will play a specialized role in passing downs as a pass rusher and do some work in coverage.
Although he has shown a lot of promise overall, he still has a lot to learn about playing his new position.
