LPGA Founders Cup tees off in Phoenix

Some of the best golfers on the LPGA tour are in the Valley.

PHOENIX - The top women golfers in the world are teeing off this weekend at Wildfire Golf Club at JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge.

"The Founders Cup was started to honor the 13 women that founded the LPGA back in 1950, so we celebrate them this weekend," Scott Wood, tournament director, said.

The top 96 of 100 world ranked LPGA golfers are in town competing.

"The LPGA Founders Cup is different than other professional sporting events because the women out here are so warm, so inviting and accommodating. They love to see and interact with the fans," Wood said.

First round action starts Thursday and continues through Sunday with tee times starting around 7 a.m.

In addition to great golf, there's also a lot of great events for fans.

"We have a green out on Friday for St. Patrick's Day accompanied by a happy hour with Guinness beer happening from 4 - 7 p.m. on the driving range. Saturday we have our junior golf day for boys and girls to interact with the golfers and take part in various stations set up along the golf course," Wood said.

Great food and merchandise is also available for purchase.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased at www.lpgafounderscup.com
