Ewen is throwing towards NCAA Track and Field history

Arizona State's Maggie Ewen is one of the best throwers in the country. The junior is just the second-ever Pac-12 female thrower to win three conference titles in the same meet along.

Arizona State’s Maggie Ewen is on the path to Track and Field greatness. The junior became the first-ever Sun Devil thrower to win three Pac-12 titles in the same season. Ewen dominated the Pac-12 Championships, winning the hammer throw (70.20m), discus (59.81m) and shot put (17.18m).

She is the second Pac-12 female thrower ever to win three conference titles in the same meet.

I first met Maggie at the USA Track and Field Olympics trails in July 2016. She'd just finished 7th in the Hammer Throw, missing out on making the Rio Olympics. Her quote afterwards stuck with me, “I was really happy with how I did today, and it was just a bonus to make it to finals.”

While Ewen is still very proud of her performance, happiness these days comes with winning, especially in the Hammer Throw, where she is re-writing the record book. She owns the Pac-12, ASU and American collegiate record, and is just six inches away from breaking the NCAA record.

Ewen was named the Pac-12 Women’s Field Athlete of the Year. She’ll compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 7-10 out in Eugene, Oregon.
