If you were like many people Thursday morning, you were glued to a television, computer or mobile device watching as former FBI director James Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
And as the hearing was wrapping up, it was Arizona Senator John McCain's turn to ask Comey questions. But the line of questioning quickly became one of the more talked about moments.
As soon as McCain started his back-and-forth with the former FBI director, many took to social media to share their thoughts on the "strange" line of questioning from the 80-year-old senator.
With Twitter and Facebook being flooded with posts about the questions, McCain issued a statement explaining his actions.
Apparently the Arizona Diamondbacks are the main reason why McCain is now the inspiration behind many internet jokes and memes.
And once the news broke about the D-Back's "involvement" in McCain's unusual questioning, the team responded via Twitter.
Never has an emoji said so much with so little.
While many aren't satisfied with McCain's explanation, some people are offering additional context to the late night baseball theory, including MLB.com beat writer Steve Gilbert and former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods.
Totally get this Sen. McCain I had a hard time functioning after that mind-numbing 3 hour 48 minute game. https://t.co/ZdAOduphx6— Steve Gilbert (@SteveGilbertMLB) June 8, 2017
Home games are at 330 am here in Italy. Yes I'm listening. Yes it's dumb. But what are you going to do? So yes, some slack please.— Grant Woods (@GrantWoods) June 8, 2017
At least McCain won't have to worry about staying up late for Thursday's series finale against the Padres. It started at 12:40 p.m. Arizona time.
Will this viral political moment lead to more 5 p.m. starts this season for the D-Backs? This GIF might be an adequate response:
