NASA is putting Earth up for adoption

NASA is celebrating Earth Day by putting Earth up for adoption, one 55-mile-wide chunk at a time.

If you visit go.nasa.gov/adopt, you can visit and explore your own piece of Earth. The pieces are randomly assigned.

You’ll even get a personalized adoption certificate to share on social media.

The certificate features satellite images and a range of NASA data about your locations, including vegetation and air quality measurements. The data allow you to see how your piece of Earth has changed over time.

According to NASA, these are the same data sets scientists use to study the changing planet.

The goal is to have the whole planet adopted by Earth Day, April 22. Once all 64,000 pieces are adopted, NASA will start again from the top.
