Reward offered for thief who broke man's ankle

PHOENIX - Phoenix Police and Silent Witness are now offering up to a $1,000 reward to find the thief who's responsible for breaking a man's ankle and stealing his wallet.

The man was caught on surveillance video inside the Valero at 51st Avenue and Baseline on Sunday, June 11, 2016. The video doesn't show the crime, but it shows the suspect.

Phoenix Police say the young man in a red t-shirt and backward ball cap wandered around the store for a few minutes just before 9 p.m., then waited for another customer outside.

"And when the victim came out, the suspect took his wallet," said Sgt. Jamie Rothschild, who's with Silent Witness. "But the victim tried to get the wallet back and at that point, the suspect kicked his leg. And when the victim fell, he broke ankle."

Sgt. Rothschild said that's when the young man stole the victim's wallet and took off in a gold Chevy Sedan, possibly a Malibu.

If you recognize the man, you're asked to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS. You can remain anonymous and could receive a reward of up to $1,000.
