Mayor Greg Stanton announces run for Congress in Arizona's 9th district

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton has announced he'll run for election in Arizona's 9th Congressional District in 2018.

Mayor Greg Stanton has officially announced his bid for Congress.

Phoenix's mayor said he'd be running in Arizona's ninth district for the 2018 election -- the seat currently held by Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema.

Just last month, Sinema announced her 2018 run for the Senate seat held by Sen Jeff Flake

In a post on Facebook, Stanton said it's "been the honor of my life to serve as Mayor of Phoenix," but Arizona "deserves better than what we're getting from Washington."

Read Stanton's full announcement:

It's been the honor of my life to serve as Mayor of Phoenix. But with what's happening in Washington, we need representatives who will fight for our community and protect our most vulnerable. Arizonans deserve better than what we're getting from Washington, and there has never been a more consequential time in the fight to protect the middle class. In Congress, I'll continue to do what we've done in Phoenix: deliver real results that improve people's lives.
