A high-ranking member of the Phoenix Police Department has become the subject of an internal investigation and has been placed on administrative leave. Cmdr. Paula Veach oversees the department's professional standards bureau, also known as internal affairs.
A member of the department with knowledge of the investigation who asked not to be named says the case stems from an Equal Opportunity Employment complaint. A spokesperson for the department confirmed Veach is on administrative leave but declined to provide details.
"Arizona State Law prohibits us from discussing internal investigations until they are completed in the entirety, including a reasonable time for appeal," said Sgt. Jonathan Howard of the public affairs bureau.
Veach most recently served as commander of the Mountain View Police Precinct in northeast Phoenix. She's an adjunct faculty member at ASU's School of Criminology and Criminal Justice Sciences. According to several social media websites, Veach makes public appearances to speak about leadership, gender influences, and policing.
12 News attempted to contact Veach to ask for comment but was unsuccessful.
