Phoenix mosque targeted, members fear hate crime

Valley mosque possibly targeted by hate crime.

Shards of glass hanging from a window, but part of the damage left behind after members of the Muslim community say the Islamic Community Center of Phoenix was targeted.

They say vandals also busted out two lights, below one of them, graffiti also possibly linked to the attack.

"This is what I call the output of this Islamophobia, this incitement that's going on out there," said Imraan Siddiqi, the executive director of the local chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations also known as or CAIR.

Imagine if a child is seeing that at their house of worship, it's going to effect them for the rest of their life," Siddiqi said.

In recent months the mosque they believe was targeted has been at the center of two armed protests against the Muslim community.

Siddiqi says mosque members can't help but be concerned that hate is what fueled the person who did this.

"People are more mindful and more watchful," he said. "I think Islamic centers have to be a lot more vigilant."

While Phoenix police say there's no indication this was a biased incident, Cair is calling on the FBI to investigate.

If you have any information on who may have caused the damage you're asked to call the Phoenix Police Department.
