Texas teacher filmed naked student, prosecutors say

A Mayde Creek High School employee is accused of inappropriately using a visual recording device on campus. Assistant Choir Director Clarence Appleby was arrested by Katy ISD Police on Friday.

KATY, Texas - New details on the arrest of a Mayde Creek High School employee were released in court Monday morning.

Katy ISD Police on Friday arrested Assistant Choir Director Clarence Appleby on accusations he recorded a female student in a makeshift changing room.

Prosecutors say the now former teacher secretly filmed the student after telling her to strip naked and try on multiple robes. He allegedly told the 17-year-old girl to get completely naked so no lines showed in the robes.

The incident allegedly occurred earlier in the day Friday in a choir room closet made up to be a changing room.

The girl told authorities she asked to use a bathroom to change, but the choir teacher told her to change in the closet. While in the closet, she said she noticed a box with a camera inside. The girl saw the camera was recording and called her mom to ask her what to do. Her mom told her to take the camera with her, but the choir teacher allegedly noticed the missing box and confronted her about it, according to prosecutors.

Eventually the girl handed over the camera, and the teacher and girl put the memory card in a school computer where she claims she saw herself naked on video. The teacher instructed her to delete the video, and she did.

The 28-year-old suspect was later arrested on a charge of inappropriate use of a visual recording device and has since posted a $30,000 bond. His next court date is Nov. 8.

He appeared in court Friday without an attorney but with her wife, who is also a choir teacher at a different school.

Prosecutors say if convicted the teacher faces anywhere from 6 months to 2 years in prison.

According to a bio that has since been removed from the Katy ISD website, this was Appleby’s third year teaching at Mayde Creek.

Katy ISD sent the following statement to parents Saturday night:

“Dear Mayde Creek High School Parents and Guardians,

Yesterday evening the Assistant Choir Director, Clarence Appleby, was arrested by the Katy ISD Police Department for alleged inappropriate use of a visual recording device on campus.

Appleby faces a state felony charge for invasive visual recording and was terminated immediately.

Thanks to the quick thinking of a student and a parent who informed the school, campus administration was able to work with the Katy ISD Police Department to arrest and charge Appleby.

Due to the nature of the incident, not much information can be disclosed at this time, as this continues to be an ongoing investigation, but please rest assured that the safety of all students is our top priority and such allegations are taken very seriously and investigated thoroughly.”
