NASA selects Jasmin Moghbeli, a marine stationed in Yuma, as an astronaut candidate

A U.S. marine stationed in Yuma, Major Jasmin Moghbeli, have been selected to be part of the astronaut candidate class.

YUMA, Ariz - A U.S. marine stationed in Yuma has been selected by NASA to join the 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class. Major Jasmin Moghbeli is a "cobra" pilot with the U.S. Marine Corps.

Moghbeli is a New York native. She earned a bachelor’s in Aerospace Engineering with Information Technology at MIT followed by a master’s in Aerospace Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. She is also a distinguished graduate from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School.

Moghbeli is one of 12 individuals selected as a candidate, chosen from a pool of more than 18,000.

According to NASA, Moghbeli is scheduled to report to Astronaut Candidate Class in August to begin two years of training. Upon completion, she will be assigned technical duties in the Astronaut Office while awaiting a flight assignment.
