Maricopa mom loses four children in Illinois house fire

MARICOPA, Ariz. - A horrific house fire in Dixon, Ill. claimed the lives of six people, including four children who formerly lived with their mother in Maricopa.

"I'm kind of in a cloud," said Veronica Masterson, the mother of the four children. "I literally asked the chaplain and (Maricopa) police officers yesterday if this was some kind of sick joke."

Seventeen-year-old Ethen Shaw, 15-year-old LeAnne, 12-year-old Hailey and 11-year-old Dylan were living with their father, 39-year-old Timothy Shaw and his wife Melissa.

According to local officials, the home was fully engulfed in flames by the time they arrived and determined the victims all died of smoke inhalation.

"I don't understand how this can happen to one family, one mother," Masterson said.

The woman says she lost a child to sudden infant death syndrome about three years ago and has had a difficult time recovering from that loss.

Funeral arrangements are being made for the children in Chandler and the family is asking for help in covering costs to transport them back to Arizona. You can click here to learn how to donate
