Woman dies after Mesa officer-involved shooting

MESA, Ariz. - Mesa police are investigating an officer-involved shooting near Baseline Road and State Route 87. No officers were injured in the shooting.

According to police, officers responded to the area for a report of a woman threatening to kill herself. Officers were preparing to make contact with her when she ran from the apartment holding a handgun, police said.

Police said she was given verbal commands to drop the weapon, and she did not comply.

Bean bag rounds were then fired in an attempt to disarm her, but they were not effective, according to police.

Police said she turned toward the officers still holding the handgun, causing them to fell threatened. 

Officers fired their weapons, striking the woman and ending the confrontation, police said. 

Mesa Fire and Medical treated the woman on the scene, and she was taken to a local hospital for treatment. She was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. 

The woman has been identified as Sabrina Ann Garcia, 34, of Mesa. 

The investigation is ongoing.
