Winter storm Stella delays Sky Harbor flights

Many flights across the nation are delayed due to a late-season snowstorm.

PHOENIX - While the Valley is sizzling under the desert sun, hundreds of thousands of people in the Midwest and Northeast are bracing for a massive winter storm. And that storm is affecting flights in and out of Sky Harbor.

As of 5:30 a.m. Monday, there were only a small handful of cancellations at the Phoenix airport, but those delays are expected to skyrocket over the next couple of days.

Monday, airlines canceled more than 700 flights across the nation, with hundreds more expected Tuesday. The storm could dump 1 to 2 feet of snow across the Northeast by Tuesday. This is happening after an unseasonably warm winter.

Carriers like Southwest say it expects to ground just about all Northeast flights on Tuesday. Other airlines may make similar decisions with blizzard conditions in the forecast.

Not only is this affecting people flying out of Phoenix, but it's also affecting the thousands of vacationers who fly into Phoenix for Spring Training.

If you're planning on traveling Monday or Tuesday, make sure to check in with your carrier.
