Vet: Abused husky's progress 'nothing short of miraculous'

The fact that he is using motor skills is a good indication that he's on the right track.

BB Bear has taken the Phoenix area by storm over the past few weeks as he recovers from abuse injuries at the Arizona Animal Rescue Mission.

Dr. Hugh Giffords, the veterinarian who's taking care of BB Bear, said at a press conference Wednesday that the puppy is making good progress, calling his recovery "nothing short of miraculous" so far.

Giffords, who works at the Phoenix Dog/Cat/Bird Hospital said BB Bear, who was in a medically induced coma last week, is showing good signs of consciousness and awareness of his surroundings.

He also said the husky puppy appears to be improving in his brain stem reflexes, which relates to his ability to use his five senses. The veterinarians hope he will regain his sight, but it's not clear yet whether he will.

BB Bear is also able to walk, though he isn't doing so normally yet. But the fact that he is using motor skills is a good indication that he's on the right track.

Giffords thanked the Arizona Rescue Mission, Two Pups Wellness and Maricopa County Animal Care and Control for their effort to help BB Bear recover.

Officials reiterated that BB Bear is still a long way from adoption-ready, but they have received emails from people as far away as Germany about the puppy.

Giffords said the most difficult decisions in BB Bear's treatment were when to bring him out of the medically induced coma, and how to lower his medication doses as he recovers.

BB Bear is expected to be at the hospital at least through the end of the month. Within three months, the doctors should have a better indication of BB Bear's outlook, and in six months, they should know fully what to expect.

Anyone with information can call Maricopa County Animal Care and Control at 602-506-7387 or the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6151.
