Uncle, girlfriend facing felony charges in hot-car death of 5-month-old

Boy was found in a Peoria apartment complex.

PEORIA, Ariz. - Two caretakers have been taken into custody after police said a 5-month-old boy died while under their supervision.

Jose Garcia Jr., uncle of the boy, and his girlfriend, Monique Avila, were booked into jail pending one count each of felony child abuse. 

The caretakers called police around 2:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon after realizing the child was in a car parked at an apartment complex near 85th and Peoria avenues Sunday evening. Officers said the caretakers removed the baby from the car and brought him into the home before calling police.

Police said they found the child not breathing. Officers said they believe the infant had been in the car for hours.

The child was declared dead at a hospital.

The caretakers, a man and and a woman, have been taken into custody, police said.

Police said the infant's parents have been notified.
