SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Tim Tebow spoke to reporters for nearly a half hour on Wednesday afternoon, but few questions had anything to do with baseball.
"Yeah, this is a game and it's fun, but it's still a game," Tebow said. "People are what's important, and an opportunity to help someone is more important than anything I could have done on the baseball diamond that day."
He's referring to a moment after his Arizona Fall League debut – a game in which he went 0-3 on the field but filled up the stat sheet with something you can't teach on the diamond.
"The guy I was signing for made a face, and I could tell something was going on. So I looked over and that's when I saw Brandon go down and have a seizure."
Brandon Berry collapsed from heat exhaustion just a few feet away from Tebow.
Berry has been experiencing seizures for the last three years and fell into another one soon thereafter. That's when Tebow says he started praying, with no idea exactly what was even happening.
"There was a point he was going through the seizure and then a point he was unconscious for a little while."
And then a few minutes later, Brandon opened his eyes. The New York Post is calling it a "miracle." Tebow is not, but he was praying when Brandon woke up.
"I didn't recognize anyone but Tebow when I woke back up," Brandon said. “We've never met, but I've seen him on TV. That helped me feel more comfortable."
The incident adds one more chapter to Tebow's growing legend. But in his mind, religion aside, it's just what every human should do.
"What are you doing to do that's more important? What, am I going to get back to the bus and look up social media, check on the game? Like what am I going to do in the next 24 hours, week or the rest of my life that's more important? Nothing, so when you have opportunities to help people, you do."
Berry says he's always respected Tebow for his beliefs, but he's never been a big fan on the field.
"I'm a Georgia football fan, so that's tough," he said.
You can bet he'll be putting that rivalry aside for now.
