Rain, gusting winds again move in from north of the Phoenix area

PHOENIX - More monsoon storms developed north of the Phoenix area Saturday. 

Winds as high as 40 mph from the storms kicked up dust and lowered visibility to as low as a quarter of a mile in some areas. The National Weather Service issued a dust storm warning through 8 p.m. for portions of Pinal and Maricopa counties, including Interstate 10 and the Phoenix Metro area.

A severe thunderstorm warning expired at 6 p.m. for parts of the west Valley, including Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, El Mirage, Yougtown, Sun City, Waddell, Sun City West, Downtown Peoria, Surprise Stadium, Arrowhead Mall and Downtown Glendale. 

The NWS said the storm brought 60 mph wind gusts and less than an inch of hail in some areas.

Surprise police said the winds knocked over multiple trees across the city, blocking roads in those areas. 

North Peoria saw more than half an inch of rain in just an hour, according to the Flood Control District of Maricopa County.

Phoenix has a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms through the evening hours, mainly before 11 p.m., according to the NWS.

Burton Barr Central Library near Margaret T. Hance Park tweeted Saturday that it had sustained some damage from the storm.

Police said the library suffered a water leak on the roof.The library will be closed for two to three days for repairs. 

The NWS issued a flash flood warning for Maricopa County until 9:15 p.m. Some locations that will experience flooding include Wickenburg, Circle City and Morristown.

The area was also under a severe thunderstorm warning until 6:30 p.m. The NWS said 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail could damage vehicles, roofs and trees. 

Earlier Saturday afternoon, storms were headed southwest into the Cave Creek area, bringing rain, gusting winds and a lot of lightning.
