PHOENIX – Police are looking for the man in a voyeur investigation after a woman said a peeping Tom was spying on her in the women’s bathroom of a PetSmart Friday morning.
Jessica Ellis said what she went through was a horrifying experience that will forever change her life.
When she walked into the women's restroom at PetSmart, she noticed something very odd.
"White toilet paper underneath the two stalls,” she said, assuming it was a meaningless mess. “I honestly just thought, 'People are unbelievable. That's just gross.’"
Now she thinks it was part of a setup by an unknown man who wanted to spy on her using the toilet.
"Never being a situation like that,” said Ellis, holding back tears. “Knowing that I was really lucky and it could have been a lot worse."
She said there were sunglasses in that pile of toilet paper “lenses that's almost like a mirror. And I see the silhouette of a man,” she said.
That man was masturbating in the stall next to her while watching her, she said.
"I knew I just needed to get out of the restroom before something else happened,” said the mother of four, because she was there alone – having just dropped off her husband and son at the airport.
Her two daughters were also not there with her.
We reached out to PetSmart for comment on the incident, which happened around the corner from the PetSmart headquarters near Loop 101 and I-17.
Their statement reads "This is a police matter, and we are cooperating fully with the authorities.”
Ellis said store management told her the security cameras spotted the man going into the bathroom 20 minutes before her, convincing her it was planned and that it was perhaps not his first time attempting such an act.
"I knew something was terribly wrong,” Ellis said. “I was in the right restroom. This was a setup."
Phoenix police are investigating, and they took possession of that security video to hopefully identify the man responsible.
Ellis wanted to share her story so other people will be more careful when they see something out of the ordinary.
"It's definitely changed how I will approach life from now on,” she said.
