PHOENIX - Phoenix VA Medical Director Deborah Amdur announced her retirement Friday, citing "personal health reasons."
Just this week, Amdur's presence at the embattled healthcare agency was called "a breath of fresh air" by Arizona Congressman Matt Salmon in an interview with 12 News.
Amdur arrived in November of 2015 after a series of fill-ins replaced fired director Sharon Helman.
On Wednesday, 12 News reported a story about a patient's secret recordings during a doctor's visit at an East Valley VA satellite clinic.
The audio contained comments from a doctor and nurse who both expressed frustration with ongoing issues such as patient scheduling, patient caseloads, and obstacles in the "Choice Program" referral system.
A spokesperson for the agency Friday told 12 News Amdur declined an interview request to discuss the retirement announcement.
