Phoenix teen thanks paramedics after surviving gunshot to the heart

PHOENIX - First responders received hugs, handshakes and thank yous Wednesday from a 14-year-old teen who survived a horrific gunshot would that nearly took his life.

Phoenix police responded to a home on Feb. 21, 2016 after Eric Mendez was accidentally shot by his uncle. The bullet entered through his arm, punctured his chest and exited into his other arm. The bullet grazed his heart.

Nearly two years later, the teen returned to a Phoenix Fire Department station to personally thank the first responders and the doctors and nurses from Phoenix Children's Hospital who all played a role in saving his life.

A spokesperson for Phoenix FD said the teen, who was 12 years old at the time, was not breathing and did not have a pulse when they arrived at the scene.
