Phoenix PD: Officer shot, killed man who held woman at knifepoint

Phoenix police are investigating a fatal shooting near 3rd Avenue and Culver Street.

A Phoenix police officer shot and killed a man who held a woman at knifepoint, then approached police with the knife Friday afternoon, a police spokesperson said.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene near 3rd Avenue and Culver Street and the officer and woman are both OK, according to police.

Officers were called to the scene after reports of a man yelling in an alley around 1:15 p.m. They arrived around 1:50 p.m., Sgt. Alan Pfohl said.

When police made contact with the man, he was sitting down with his arms wrapped around a woman and a knife to her neck.

The man threatened to kill the woman and told officers he was sitting on a bomb, according to Pfohl.

An officer fired one shot at the suspect, Pfohl said, killing him.

Police did not say whether a specific threat or action heightened the situation, leading the officer to shoot.

Pfohl said via email that officers found the suspect had wrapped a chain around the woman's waist to prevent her from running from him.

An earlier version of this story cited police information that the man approached at least one officer with the knife before the shooting. Later information from police revealed that was not the case.
