Phoenix PD detains suspect after 15-hour hotel room standoff; victim not harmed

A standoff that started around 2:30 Tuesday morning at Comfort Suites hotel near I-17 and Peoria has ended peacefully.

PHOENIX - A standoff between police and a suspect at a Comfort Suites led to the closure of I-17 between Peoria and Dunlap avenues, according to Phoenix police.

The roadway reopened Tuesday afternoon after a few hours.

Police said that officers heard shots fired from inside the room and forced their way inside. They detained both people inside -- the suspect, identified as Gary Minor, had minor injuries and the victim was not injured.

A police spokesperson said investigators don't yet know what happened inside the room.

The standoff started around 2:30 a.m., according to police, after Minor abandoned his truck near I-17 and Peoria and fled to a nearby hotel with a female associate.

Police said the truck's license plate number had been reported stolen.

Officers were searching the area for Minor, according to Phoenix PD, when Surprise police called to report the woman Minor was with had texted a family member saying Minor was armed and she was not able to leave.

Minor was arrested and booked on several charges including aggravated assault, unlawful imprisonment and kidnapping.
