Phoenix firefighters put out fire at LGBTQ youth center

One-n-ten will be open at the Southwest Center for HIV and AIDS at Central and Portland avenues in Phoenix until its new building is complete.

The Phoenix Fire Department put out a blaze at a youth center in central Phoenix Wednesday.

The youth center, located on 3rd Street between Indian School and Osborn roads, is run by the one•n•ten organization -- a nonprofit dedicated to helping LGTBQ teens, some of whom are homeless.

The building was empty and nobody was hurt in the fire.

Ladder crews cut holes to let the heat and smoke out of the building and firefighters used an aggressive approach to put out the fire, officials said.

Fire investigators found no evidence of arson. Phoenix FD said it was likely caused by improperly stored rags and batteries in a hot, unventilated room.

The building was a total loss.
