Phoenix councilwoman Kate Gallego announces run for mayor

Kate Gallego has officially announced her candidacy for the mayoral 2018 election race in Phoenix.

PHOENIX - Phoenix councilwoman Kate Gallego announced Monday she is running for mayor of Phoenix.

This announcement comes after current Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton announced his run for Congress in Arizona's ninth district for the 2018 election -- the seat currently held by Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema.

Just hours after Stanton's announcement, Councilman Daniel Valenzuela of District 5 announced he will run for mayor.

A new message appeared on Gallego's website Monday morning. The site's homepage reads:

“I’m Kate Gallego, and I’m running to be the next Mayor of Phoenix. Last year, Phoenix added more people than any other city in the country.  When you are the fastest growing city in the country, you have to be smart.  We need to invest in our infrastructure, our universities, and most importantly our people.  As a councilwoman for this great city, I know what it takes to create jobs, improve transportation, protect neighborhoods and be responsible with your money. I look forward to sharing my vision for the city with you and earning your vote.”

The councilwoman's Facebook cover photo was also updated to reflect the new campaign, followed by a short, two-sentence post saying "it is official."

Gallego has been serving Phoenix as the councilwoman for District 8 since 2013. She was just recently re-elected in August.
