Peoria police warn of jury duty scam

Male subject is robo calling Peoria residents about jury scam.

PEORIA, Ariz. - Receive a call from police about missing jury duty? Peoria police say it's a scam.

Peoria police say several incidents of this jury duty scam have been reported and are being investigated.

According to police, victims of the scam will receive phone calls from a man identifying himself as a Peoria police sergeant.

The man tells the victims they failed to appear for jury duty or respond to a jury summons -- he'll then try to convince them to pay money in various ways either electronically or over the phone.

Officer Brandon Sheffert, a spokesperson for the department, says the department will never request this kind of information or payment over the phone.

If you receive this call, hang up and contact police.

"As a general rule, when someone is aggressively pressuring you for money in this manner, it is more than likely not legitimate," Sheffert said in a release.

Anyone with information on this scam is urged to call the Peoria Police Department at 623-773-8311.
