Peoria officer climbs Mt. Kilimanjaro to honor fallen officers

Nearly 20,000 feet -- that's how high Peoria police officer Paul Hermans climbed to reach the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

It's the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

The Peoria Police Department recently shared Paul's photo from Africa's highest point.

But Paul didn't do it for the glory or the photo op or even the congratulations that have surely come. He did it for something much bigger.

In the photo, Paul holds up a blue flag. The department said he participated in the climb as a way to honor all fallen officers.

And for that Officer Hermans, we salute you.
