Peoria girl finds mother shot, police believe father is shooter

PEORIA, Ariz. - Police in Peoria said a woman was killed in a shooting at an apartment complex Friday afternoon. Police believe she was shot by a man they later found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

First responders took the woman with life-threatening injuries to the hospital from the scene, near Loop 101 and Peoria Avenue. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police identified the woman as 49-year-old Tammy Mattison.

Her 12-year-old daughter had called 911 after finding her mother shot.

Police found the suspect in another apartment with a life-threatening gunshot wound and took him to the hospital. Police believe he is the girl's father. A police spokesperson said the man's wound appeared to be self-inflicted.

The young girl has been placed with other family members.

Police advised the public to avoid the area if possible while they investigate. Peoria Avenue is closed between 91st and 87th avenues during the investigation.
