MCSO K9s get protective vests thanks to donations

Vest donated by a non-profit aimed at protecting K-9's from gunfire on the job.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office K9 team received new protective gear recently, thanks to generous donations from the public.

Six dogs from MCSO received bullet- and stab-protective vests through Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a nonprofit that provides the vests to keep police dogs safe.

According to MCSO's Facebook page, K9 Bull's vest was sponsored by Petra Keller of Washoe Valley, Nevada. The others -- Karl, Ryker, Bach, Hero and Osa -- were sponsored anonymously.

Bull's vest will be embroidered with the words "In honor of Sadie Keller," while Ryker, Bach, Hero and Osa will receive vests that read "In memory of K9 Ty, California City Police Department." Kar's vest will read "In memory of Johanne L. Walker."

Vested Interest has provided more than 2,600 vests for dogs since its inception in 2009, thanks to more than $2.1 million in donations.

A donation of $950 covers the cost of one vest, according to the Facebook post.

Thanks to the donors for keeping these important pups safe!
