Mary Cameli becomes first woman chief for Mesa Fire and Medical Department

MESA, Ariz. - The City of Mesa announced Thursday that Mary Cameli will take over as the new Fire and Medical Department Chief.

Cameli has been with the department for 33 years. She had been the interim fire chief since Oct. 4 after former chief Harry Beck retired.

According to a release announcing the appointment, Cameli with become the first woman fire chief for Mesa.

She was also among the city's first two female firefighters.

"I am extremely honored to have been selected as Chief and I am very grateful to those who have given me this opportunity," Cameli said in a release. "It is a privilege to be chosen to lead the exceptional men and women of the Mesa Fire and Medical Department.
