MESA, Ariz. - A Mesa fire spokesperson said a man was found dead after a house fire near Broadway Road and Val Vista Drive in Mesa Saturday.
Firefighters said the victim, who was about 50 years old, was trapped in a bedroom that caught fire.
Sean Eifert, the victim's neighbor, said he was getting groceries from his truck when he noticed smoke rising from his neighbor's house.
Eifert said he went inside and tried to find him.
But there was nothing he or anyone else could do. Firefighters said they found the man dead when they arrived, and the bedroom he was in was fully involved in fire.
Ken Hall, a captain with the Mesa Fire and Medical Department, said crews had ripped through a window to try to make a quick rescue.
A total of four people lived in the house that caught fire, according to fire authorities. The three people who have been displaced will stay with family members, firefighters said.
The man who tried to help is sending his thoughts to the family.
"My heart goes out to them. To lose your house, to lose a family member -- I'm choked up sick about it," Eifert said.
Firefighters said they believe the smoke detector was working at the time. They are still trying to determine what caused the fire.
If you would like to know how to help, neighbors have set up a GoFundMe page for Garcia's family to help with funeral expenses and for lodging and basic necessities while they are displaced.
