CHANDLER - Chandler police say a 3-year-old girl has died after she was shot near Alma School and Ray roads Thursday night.
She was taken to the hospital, but she died from her injuries.
Police arrested the victim's father, 33-year-old Eric Sands.
He is being held on charges of possession of dangerous drugs and misconduct with a weapon since Chandler police officials said he is prohibited possession.
There should not have been a gun in the home in the first place, according to police.
Steven Henderson, who lives in the neighborhood said he heard one gunshot.
"It's just a kid, man," he said, explaining how the story hit close to home for him since he has children and grandchildren.
Police said the little girl didn't have much chance to survive her injuries.
“There was a shotgun involved," said Det. Seth Tyler from Chandler PD. "This was a very horrific scene obviously for the parents -- all the public safety personal that were involved as well.”
“Accidents happen,” said family friend Zenaida Contreras. “They don’t just happen with firearms, and it’s the same thing like when a baby drowns in a pool, I mean it’s an accident."
Brissa Marquez told 12 News her family cried when they learned of the tragedy.
They live right across the street and say Sands and his family are good people.
“No one’s perfect," Marquez said. "Eric and Sierra were great parents. Great parents. I’m not going to take anything away from them like that."
Investigators are still looking into the incident.
