Family remembers Chandler couple killed in San Diego bike rally crash

Family and friends reflect on the life of Elias and Annamarie Contreras.

CHANDLER, Ariz. - The family of Cruz and AnnaMarie Contreras tearfully remembered the couple, who they said loved to ride motorcycles, travel and devoted their lives to helping others.

"Everything seems like a horrible nightmare that we cannot wake up from," said Jacob Contreras, the couple's nephew, who read a note from the couple's three daughters. "We loved my mom and dad very much and we want to share with the world who they truly were."

The couple was killed in a crash in San Diego last weekend.

The daughters said Cruz was the family cook, always preparing a meal for everyone and making sure all appetites were fed. AnneMarie was remembered as a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time on motorcycles with her husband.

The couple both shared a mutual passion for helping children and were foster parents. Cruz was also a guidance counselor for troubled youth and AnnaMarie was a teacher's assistant at Jane D. Hull Elementary School in Chandler.

"I remember saying to myself and telling her that I couldn't have gotten through days without her help," said Lisa Sharr, a second grade teacher at the school.

San Diego police say a suspected drunk driver plummeted 60 feet off the Coronado Bridge, landing on top of the couple and two others.

The family has set up a GoFundMe account account to help pay for expenses and are organizing a motorcycle ride to honor the couple.
