MESA, Ariz. - Arson investigators are looking into what caused a fire that left an East Valley family without a place to live just weeks away from Christmas.
The fire broke out around 3 a.m. Thursday at a mobile home park near Main Street and Loop 202 near Mesa.
Laureen Vernagus' sister-in-law, mother-in-law and 9-year-old niece were asleep when they woke up to flames.
The family was able to make it out safely with their two dogs, but they lost everything in the fire, including something priceless.
"They just lost my father-in-law and his urn was inside and they can't locate that either, it's tragic." said Vernagus as she stood in front of the wreckage of the house.
"My niece is just beside herself. She is 9, she doesn't understand. She's lost all her stuff, and she just over and over again is crying about all the stuff she lost. She just doesn't get it," said Vernagus.
Vernagus set up a GoFundMe page for the family.
