FAA: Phoenix flight turned around because of flames from engine

A British Airways flight made an emergency landing at Sky Harbor International Airport.

PHOENIX - A British Airways flight headed from Phoenix to London Wednesday night turned back to Sky Harbor because of an apparent fire in an engine, according to the FAA.

The Boeing 747 was taking off from Sky Harbor's Runway 8 around 8:50 p.m. when the controller handling the flight saw flames from an engine and told the plane's crew.

The plane was in the air for about an hour, landing back on Runway 8 just before 10 p.m., an FAA spokesperson said.

Airport officials have not said what caused the fire in the engine.
