PHOENIX - Commercial real estate company RED Development and Mayor Greg Stanton will host a special ceremony Thursday to mark the start of construction on the long-awaited Fry’s grocery store in downtown Phoenix.
The project will take the place of what is now a parking lot across the street from the Talking Stick Resort Arena and CityScape between Washington Street and Jefferson Avenue and First and Second streets.
The development, called Block 23, will house downtown’s first full-service grocery store, and will also include approximately 330 apartments, as well as 200,000 square feet of office, restaurant and retail space, according to a release.

The city has given millions to the project, KTAR reports.
