Bystanders help save man from drowning in motel pool

PHOENIX - A man is in critical but stable condition after bystanders pulled him from a motel pool Sunday, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

The 53-year-old was found at the bottom of a pool near 7th and Mohave streets around 5 p.m. after he had been drinking, firefighters said.

Crews said bystanders immediately performed CPR until fire department personnel arrived on scene.

The man did not have a pulse when crews arrived but had a pulse prior to leaving for the hospital in an ambulance.

Crew members said upon pulling into the Banner University Medical Center Emergency Room, the man opened his eyes and asked what happened.

Firefighters said the incident highlights the importance of early bystander CPR.
