Arizona may be home to one of the 'world's most colorful' places

Some might think Arizona is just desert -- but among the heat and saguaro cacti, one may find some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. At least, one of the most colorful, according to CNN.

CNN Travel recent put together a list featuring "25 of the world's most bright, colorful places." On the list were well-known places like the Great Barrier Reef, Venice and the Northern Lights -- visible from a handful of places.

But near the top of the list, is a place in northeastern Arizona known for its brilliant and varied colors which change as the sun moves across the sky. Described in the post as "beautiful but barren," Arizona's Painted Desert is truly a sight to see.

"Clay and sandstone worn by the eons into dramatic formations take on unlikely shades in Arizona's Painted Desert," CNN writes. "Lavender, orange, red, gray and pink tones stretch across the stone in layers of geologic history."

The Painted Desert topped all North American places on the list including Time Square in New York City, New England in the fall, St. John's in Newfoundland and the aforementioned Northern Lights.
