Arizona couple looking for stranger who saved them in Las Vegas shooting

Daniel Chiao recounts the quick thinking and fast bravery of an unknown hero who knocked down a fence to help his family and others escape the mass shooting in Vegas.

MESA, Ariz. - An Arizona man and his wife caught in the crossfire in Las Vegas Sunday are back home four days after the shooting.

They escaped injury, but not because they immediately ran to safety.

Instead, Daniel Chiao and a stranger knocked over a section of fencing at the outdoor concert so more people could get out of the line of fire.

VEGAS SHOOTING: Facts vs. rumors

“Crying, screaming, confusion,” Chiao recalled, explaining the massacre keeps repeating in his mind over and over. “It sounded like war.”

He thinks he and his wife Elizabeth may not have made it out of that war back to their children in Mesa if it weren’t for that stranger.

Why? Their only exit, from where they were ducking, was toward the gunman.

“Nobody was going to go that way,” said Elizabeth Chiao.

The stranger took control of the chaotic moment.

“[He said], 'Move this fence. You know? Let’s move this fence,'” Chiao remembered.

Once they moved chain-link fence out of the way, the Chiao couple bolted to safety.

“There was nowhere to run, nowhere to hide,” Elizabeth said. “You didn’t know if the bleachers were going to keep the bullets out or if they were going to come in.”

As for the man who took charge to save their lives and so many others, they have no idea where he went.

“I didn’t know if he was still in the back. I don’t know if he came with us. His quick thinking -- that helped everybody move out of danger. I hope he made it out safe,” said Chiao.
