53-year-old victim of Mesa house fire identified

MESA, Ariz. - Mesa police have identified the man killed in a house fire Saturday afternoon as 53-year-old Manuel Anthony Garcia.

A Mesa fire spokesperson said Garcia was found dead after a house fire near Broadway Road and Val Vista Drive. Firefighters said he was trapped in a bedroom that caught fire.

Neighbor Sean Eifert spotted the fire and tried to find Garcia, but couldn't get to him.

Ken Hall, a captain with the Mesa Fire and Medical Department, said crews tried to rescue him through a window, but couldn't save Garcia.

Three other people in the house were displaced and will stay with family members, firefighters said.

MFD said the smoke detector seemed to be working. They are still trying to determine the fire's cause.

If you would like to know how to help, neighbors have set up a GoFundMe page for Garcia's family to help with funeral expenses and for lodging and basic necessities while they are displaced.
