5 things you can do to protect your home from wildfires

Here are some tips from the Fire Protection Agency on how to protect your home from a wildfire.

PHOENIX - Wildfire season has started in Arizona and for homeowners who live near the Cactus Fire and Sawmill Fire areas, fire containment, evacuation and safety for personal dwellings has already become a priority.

Visible plumes of smoke can be seen miles away, leaving a community unsettled.

If you live in an outlying area of a forest preserve, or live in an area with lots of surrounding wildlife, here are some tips from the National Fire Protection Association to help protect your home:

1. Create a defensible space around your home; remove dead plants, grass and weeds
2. Remove all dead leaves from rain gutters
3. Trim trees regularly
4. Remove propane tanks from your backyard and immediate area
5. Keep all plants and vegetation watered as much as possible
