14-year-old boy in stable condition after being shot

A 12-year-old boy was taken to a local area hospital after being shot in the leg at a community park.

PHOENIX - Paramedics took a boy to the hospital with a gunshot wound Monday evening.

The boy, who police said is 14 years old, was transported in critical condition, according to Phoenix fire officials, who said later that the boy was in stable condition at Phoenix Children's Hospital.

The scene of the shooting was near 99th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road. Officers found the boy in the roadway and provided first aid, police officials said. They tried to ask him questions, but he was uncooperative.

According to police, witnesses left the area before speaking with police.

Police said the boy has a "significant leg injury," and they believe the wound was self-inflicted or accidental.

According to police, the boy told paramedics that he was 12 years old before police determined he was 14 years old. An earlier version of this story referred to the boy as 12 years old.
