Some Arizonans turn to marijuana to stem holiday stress

This week marks five years since medical marijuana dispensaries opened in Arizona. A look at the use of medical marijuana for relief from holiday stress, anxiety and depression.

Wednesday marked five years since the first medical marijuana dispensary opened in Arizona.

Now there are more than 130,000 medical marijuana patients across Arizona, and many of them have turned to pot to deal with depression and stress, including the kind that's holiday-induced.

Many medical marijuana patients are filing into dispensaries seeking relief from stress, depression and anxiety.

"It's very stressful," said Tony Galante. "You're trying to shop, you're trying to cook, you're picking people up. You're doing all these things."

Bill Brother owns Encanto Green Cross in Phoenix, and he's seen a spike in clientele.

"People get upset, they get depressed, excited, anxious," he said. "Holidays and families always create stress."

But Brother said even with the stress issues, 80 percent of his patients come in for pain-related issues.
