FOREST LAKES, Ariz. - The search continues Wednesday for a suspect the Coconino County Sheriff's Office says is responsible for setting fires and firing shots at a Forest Service officer.
The suspect was last seen wearing a blue shirt and dark pants with a green backpack. Authorities say he allegedly set fires in the Canyon Point Campground near Payson, northeast of the Valley, on Monday night.
According to CCSO, officials responding to the area found eight small fires burning, which appeared to have been intentionally set. Residents reported seeing a person matching the suspect's description in the area.
CCSO said Wednesday morning the campground was evacuated.
He then allegedly fired at a Forest Service fire prevention officer Tuesday morning with a handgun and a shotgun at close rage. CCSO said nearly 10 shots in total were fired at the officer. The officer was not injured and was able to escape the area to call for help.
Deputies have not released his name or determined a motive. CCSO said they have no reason to believe he's not in the area and say they think he knows the area well.
A photo of the suspect was captured by a camera on a local business in the area, CCSO said.
Anyone with information, should contact the Coconino County Sheriff's Office or call 911 and not approach the man.
