Police: DNA used to solve attempted armed robbery from 5 years ago

COTTONWOOD, Ariz. - Police said they have found the suspect from an attempted armed robbery in Cottonwood from five years ago.

In September 2012, a man tried to rob a business in the 700 block of East State Route 89A wearing a hooded mask and a wooden club, according to police.

Police said the employee struggled with the suspect and was able to disarm him and remove his mask.

The suspect ran away before getting any money, police said.

The club and mask were sent to the Arizona Department of Public safety Northern Regional Crime Laboratory for analysis.

In October, DNA results identified 32-year-old Cottonwood resident Wesley Michael Robert Smith Jr. as the suspect, according to police.

Police said Smith faces a charge of attempted armed robbery.

Smith was being held at the Yavapai County Detention Center, where police said he was in custody on unrelated charges.
