Lake-goers rescued, boats damaged after storm hit Lake Pleasant

Monsoon storms dumped rain, capsizing boats and leaving boaters in need of rescue.

LAKE PLEASANT, Ariz.- Maricopa County Lake Patrol Deputies rescued several lake-goers from choppy waters and structures were damaged after a storm hit Lake Pleasant Friday around 4:30 p.m.

Deputies rescued three juveniles on a personal watercraft and two women in their 50s on paddle boards who were overcome by the storm. MSCO said one of the paddle boarders was taken to a local hospital with life threatening injuries from nearly drowning but is expected to make a full recovery. No other victim sustained major injuries, MCSO said.

According to MCSO, the three juveniles departed from the Four Lane Boat Ramp at the north entrance of the lake on a personal watercraft prior to the storm hitting. Family members reported the juveniles as missing when the storm hit and they did not return, MCSO said.

One family member successfully recovered one of the victims using another watercraft and the other two victims were rescued by Lake Patrol Deputies. All three juveniles were in good health, MCSO said.

In a separate incident near Jet Ski Point, the women paddle boarders were overcome by waves produced by the storm. One of the women was wearing a personal floatation device and the other was not, according to MCSO.

The storm caused significant damage across the Lake Pleasant area. MCSO reported the following damage:

• Power outage at the Operations Center and Scorpion Bay Marina

• Roof partially ripped off from atop the restaurant at Scorpion Bay Marina

• Breakwater broken loose and floating free

• Concrete breakwater flipped upside down

• Boat lift in the MCSO boat house damaged

MCSO also reported that several boats and other personal watercraft were damaged, some were even totaled. Some trees were downed and roads were flooded as well, MSCO said.
