Inmate found after walking away from Arizona work crew

The Arizona Department of Corrections captured an inmate Thursday after he walked away from a work detail in Safford Wednesday.

A search team found Juan C. Nunley in an irrigation ditch in a vacant lot around 3:45 p.m., according to a release from the department.

“ADC’s Chase and K-9 Teams, in coordination with the Graham County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Thatcher Police Department, Safford Police Department, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety (which provided helicopter air support), all did an excellent job to successfully pursue the fugitive inmate and return him to state custody without incident,” said ADC Director Charles L. Ryan in the release.

Nunley was serving seven years for theft and trafficking in stolen property since 2014. He'll face new charges and more time behind bars due to the escape attempt.
