A wrong-way driver causes several crashes, killing a motorcyclist and closing I-17 SB at Black Canyon City, according to DPS.

BLACK CANYON CITY, Ariz.- Arizona Department of Public Safety are investigating a string of accidents involving a wrong-way driver which closed the southbound Interstate 17 at Black Canyon City Tuesday afternoon.

According to DPS, the wrong-way driver caused several collisions one of which involved a motorcycle near Rock Springs. The motorcyclist was announced dead on the scene.

DPS said they received calls around 2:30 p.m. about a wrong-way driver traveling northbound in a red SUV near milepost 242.

ADOT said the backup grew to about seven miles before the interstate reopened around 7:40 p.m.

Traffic traveling southbound can exit the I-17 at Black Canyon City and re-enter the freeway using the Black Canyon City on-ramp, but should consider alternate routes.

Northbound traffic was not affected by the closure, ADOT said.

Police have not released any identities of those involved in the crash.
