GLOBE, Ariz.- The Coconino County Sheriff's Office has confirmed the man suspected of starting multiple fires and assaulting a Forest Service employee earlier this month in Forest Lakes was shot and killed Saturday morning.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigations, law enforcement with the U.S. Forest Service and San Carlos Apache Tribal Police Department came across the suspect around 2:00 a.m. Saturday in Timber Camp, 20 miles northeast of Globe.
The FBI, U.S. Forest Service, San Carlos Apache Tribal PD, Arizona Department of Public Safety along with CCSO and other local law enforcement were part of a multi-agency manhunt for this suspect for the last few weeks.
According to a Forest Lakes Fire District Facebook post, the man engaged law enforcement officers in gunfire.
The suspect was pronounced dead on scene, authorities said.
On July 4, the suspect allegedly fired at a Forest Service fire prevention officer with a handgun and a shotgun at close rage. Authorities said the man allegedly set eight fires in the Canyon Point Campground near Payson, northeast of the Valley, the night before.
Investigators have identified the suspect but are awaiting for the next of kin to be notified, the FBI said.
