A Flagstaff waitress is still recovering at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center following the deadly shooting in Las Vegas less than one week ago.
Tawny Wamack, 21, was attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival with a friend who got the tickets as a gift, said Brandon Webb, the general manager of a Denny’s on South Milton Road in Flagstaff.
“She had requested time off,” said Webb. “She had been planning for this trip for months. It was a gift from one of her friends.”
One of the bullets went straight through Wamack’s left shoulder and hit her hand.
“She was shot in the left shoulder, upper chest area, but the bullet went through above the heart and but below the collar bone,” said Webb. “So apparently the bullet went straight through but when it went through, it hit her hand.”
Wamack almost lost her thumb due to the shooting but it was saved after she went through surgery. Now, the hospital is considering releasing her, according to Webb.
“Yesterday, they actually told her she was going to be able to be discharged if the X-rays came back OK,” he said. “I guess there was something or maybe (they were) not fully comfortable letting her go, so they kept her overnight and told her it would be a day or two days.”
Wamack is originally from Lake Havasu City and has been a student at Northern Arizona University. She has worked at the South Milton Road Denny’s for at least three years.
“I know she is well known with the regulars, very friendly, outgoing,” said Webb. “It’s always nice to have her around -- she can always lighten the mood. Always making everyone laugh.”
On Oct. 12, all three Denny’s locations in Flagstaff will host a fundraiser for Wamack from 3-11 p.m.
“I believe it’s going to be 20 percent of the proceeds will go to her,” said Webb. “And then we are currently working on doing a raffle with a few prizes and all of that would go to her as well.”
Those who are interested in helping by donating goods or services can call the Denny’s located at 2122 S. Milton Rd. at (928) 779-1371. Ask to speak with Brandon Webb or Irwin.
There is also a GoFundMe account started for Wamack.
